June 2005—The PS8R from SLS Loudspeakers (www.slsloudspeakers.com) is a bi-amplified near-field using the company’s new Evenstar^™ Sigma-Delta digital amplifier technology. The driver complement includes an 8-inch woofer with an integral phase plug for the LF and the company’s PRD500 5-inch ribbon driver for the HF. The ribbon tweeter has 120-degree horizontal and 30-degree vertical dispersion, allowing for a wide sweet spot. A user-selectable limiting circuit can protect the woofer from over-excursion. The LF amplifier has 180W of power; the HF amp provides 40W. Response is rated at 44 to 20k Hz (±2 dB). Retail is $1,495 each.

November 2004—Offering enhanced sonic performance for in-wall and in-ceiling installs, both new models include a PRD Planar Ribbon HF driver and a polycomposite woofer with Santoprene surround, which provide the extended frequency range necessary for the accurate playback of high definition music. July 2004—SLS Loudspeakers offers the SLS HT400 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System ($3,000), a package centered on the lauded PRD NEO3 planar ribbon driver, which is known for super-smooth, upper-end clarity. The complete surround system includes four passive HT6.5S two-way speakers, a passive HT6.5C dedicated center-channel speaker and the 150W HT6.5W powered subwoofer. All full-range speakers included in the package are video-shielded, bi-wireable and feature gold-plated terminals, custom grilles and high-polish ebony piano lacquer finishes. The 8-ohm HT6.5S speakers feature a 42 to 25k Hz frequency range, a 6.5-inch woofer, a PRD NEO3 ribbon tweeter and handle 100W RMS (200W max). The 4-ohm HT6.5C has dual 6.5-inch woofers, a PRD NEO3, a frequency range of 48 to 25k Hz and handles 150W RMS (300W max). SLS’ HT6.5W subwoofer has a 6.5-inch, high-excursion woofer with rubber surround, a response of 25 to 150 Hz with a 50 to 150Hz variable low-pass crossover and an internal amp with a power handling of 150W RMS.

SLS S1065 SURROUND SYSTEM
November 2002—At last month’s AES show, SLS Loudspeakers unveiled a 5-channel surround system based on its new S1065 speakers, which features dual 10-inch woofers, a 6.5-inch cone midrange and the PRD500 ribbon tweeter. The MF and HF drivers are mounted on a rotatable panel, which allows the speakers to be used horizontally or vertically, with the woofers oriented above, below or on either side of the mid/high section. The 26×36x12.5-inch (WxHxD) cabinet weighs 136 pounds and is capable of 121 dB continuous SPLs (127dB peaks!). Response is rated as 35 to 30k Hz (±2.5 dB); retail is $3,000 each.

November 2002—A new offering from SLS is the S1066, a high-SPL monitor with dual 12-inch woofers, twin 6.5-inch mids and the large PRD1000 tweeter. The planar ribbon drivers in both systems feature neodymium push-pull magnet structures, a high-temperature Kapton diaphragm and response out to 40 kHz.

December 2001—SLS Loudspeakers’ SLS 6.1 System ($8,000 in custom oak finish, $6,850 in black) is a digital-ready surround studio monitoring solution that incorporates the company’s S8R monitors and a pair of matched PSS12 powered subwoofers. The S8R is a two-way monitor that is used for all channel configurations (5.1 and up), and features a 5-inch ribbon tweeter and an 8-inch woofer in a 19×10.5×11.25-inch (HxWxD) enclosure. Frequency response is 44 to 20k Hz (±2.5 dB) and maximum SPL is 110 dB. The PSS12 subwoofer includes a 12-inch woofer, offers a 28 to 150Hz frequency response and features a variable crossover (50 to 100 Hz). The SLS 6.1 System features the company’s new PRD500 ribbon driver; SLS’ line-source technology reportedly provides higher transient response, extended dynamic range and sonic accuracy.

October 2005—The three-way active reflex–designed S10 is the newest and largest fullrange monitor in Quested’s (www.quested.com) S Series; other models include the S6, S7, S8 and SB10. Drive units are a 10-inch cone bass, 3-inch soft-dome mid and 11/8-inch HF soft-dome. The three integrated Class-A/B amplifiers, designed by Terry Clarke and manufactured by Quested’s sister company, MC2 Audio, are capable of providing a total of 690 watts RMS. Price: $2,000.

QUESTED SB10
October 2005—Quested’s SB10 subwoofer complements all the fullrange models in its S Series, with a 10-inch long-throw driver fitted in a tuned cabinet. The SB10 breaks with tradition in that the matched 215W RMS amplifier and 2-channel variable filter section of the SB10 controller are housed in a separate single-rackspace unit. Two advantages to this approach: The electronics do not suffer from intense LF vibrations and adjustments can be made accurately from the listening position. Price: $2,000.

QUESTED S6/S7/S8 SERIES
June 2005—Quested’s S6/S7/S8 Series reference monitors are all two-way active systems. Priced at $695 each, the S6 (pictured) has a 5-inch LF driver and a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter. The $995 (each) S7’s driver complement is a 6.5-inch woofer paired with a 1.25-inch soft-dome HF driver; priced at $1,495, the top-end S8 uses an 8-inch LF driver and 1-inch soft-dome tweeter. The S7 and S8 incorporate a ported enclosure design. User-selectable EQ settings are a common characteristic of the line. The S6 is driven by a 65W LF amp, with 45W driving HF. The S7’s amplifiers are rated at 120W and 7W, while the S8’s are rated at 220W and 150W. Response (±2 dB) is given as 75 to 22k Hz (S6); 65 to 22k Hz (S7) and 50 to 20k Hz (S8).

QUESTED MONITORING SYSTEMS F5 AND F19
October 2002—The $695 F5 is a compact, self-powered, active near-field with a 5-inch bass driver and 1/4-inch soft-dome tweeter powered by 80W RMS amps. Features: infinite baffle design with front-mount volume, HF and bass boost/cut controls. The F19 sub-bass speaker has a 10-inch bass driver and 180W RMS Class-D amps. The F19 for stereo applications ($1,495) and F19.1 feature bass management, variable lowpass filter settings, phase adjustment, separate LFE gain, and sub output/direct input to allow for multiple cabinets. Caters to surround applications.

QUESTED SURROUND SYSTEMS
December 2001—High-end 5.1 systems from Quested Monitoring Systems—$54,000 to $113,000, depending on configuration—employs the company’s Q412 cabinets for front left and right channels, the Q212 for the center and either the Q212 or Q412 for rear channels. The Q412 is Quested’s largest three-way monitor and is designed for soffit-mounting in large control rooms. The Q412 uses the same custom 12-inch radial-chassis bass drivers as the Q212, and its mid driver and tweeter are each soft-dome units (3-inch and 34mm, respectively). Both the Q412 and Q212 are supplied with analog crossovers or optional digital crossovers that offer 80 user presets, and four of the company’s AP800 amps deliver more than 2,000W RMS to each cabinet in the Q412 (1,400W RMS in the Q212). Quested’s QSB118 subwoofer can be used for bass extension and/or the bass effects channel, and comes with a separate electronics package that also includes the AP800 power amp delivering 450W RMS into 8 ohms. The subwoofer’s main cabinet contains one 18-inch driver with a 4-inch, four-layer voice coil, triple rear suspension allowing for peak-to-peak movements up to 20 mm and a vented magnet for enhanced voice coil cooling.

QUESTED VS3208
June 2000—The Quested VS3208 is a three-way monitor that houses two 8-inch bass drivers, a 3-inch soft-dome midrange driver and a 11/8-inch tweeter. The VS3208 is only 19 inches wide, which makes it possible to place the speaker above 19-inch rackmounted equipment. The built-in amplifier provides in excess of 400W RMS; a three-position EQ switch on each of the LF, MF and HF bands; and an input sensitivity switch with an 18dB range. QUESTED VS2205 SURROUND SYSTEM
March 1999—Quested debuts a new surround package targeted at music and film soundtrack production. The system includes five Quested VS2205 self-powered near-field speakers and a VS1112 self-powered subwoofer. The VS2205 uses two 5-inch woofers and a 28mm soft-dome tweeter in a lightweight, low-profile enclosure. Quested recently upped the amplifier power output for the VS2205 to 100W for bass and 75W for high frequency; monitors now deliver 108 dB maximum average SPL. The Quested VS1112 subwoofer offers left, center, right-summing and discrete effects channel inputs. The VS1112 has a built-in 400W amplifier for 103dB max output down to 15 Hz. The new Quested 5.1 monitoring system has a list price of $11,000.

September 2005—The MPS-1611P from M&K Professional is a more compact, less-expensive monitor based on its popular MPS-2510P. The bi-amplified 6.5-inch, two-way, near- to mid-field MPS-1611P is suitable for stereo or multichannel applications, has internal mag shielding and can be used stand-alone or with any of M&K’s powered subwoofers. The driver complement is a 6.5-inch polyproplyene woofer with a 1-inch fabric-dome transmission line tweeter with an aluminum faceplate. A tapered cabinet port has a removable plug for converting the system to a sealed box or a ported design for adapting the monitor to different room and/or subwoofer configurations. Inputs are XLR/TRS balanced and unbalanced RCA; all are buffered, allowing simultaneous connections of pro (console, DAW, etc.) and consumer (DVD, surround decoder, etc.) gear without switching or repatching.

June 2005—Priced at $999 each, M&K Professional’s MPS-1611P is a bi-amplified (110W LF; 50W HF), two-way design with a port on the enclosure’s rear panel. A removable port plug configures the MPS-1611P for either stand-alone (ported) or as a sealed cabinet for satellite/subwoofer applications. For use without a subwoofer, remove the plug, throw a mode switch into “full-range” and the system delivers down to about 45 Hz (±3 dB). The driver complement includes a 6.25-inch polypropylene woofer and 1-inch soft-dome, ferrofluid-cooled tweeter. Upper-end response is rated at 22 kHz (±2 dB).

November 2002—The MPS-1625P from M&K Professional is a tri-amplified, self-powered Tripole Surround loudspeaker. The driver complement includes a polypropylene 6.5-inch woofer; a 1-inch, soft-dome, Ferrofluid transmission-line tweeter; and two 3.25-inch mid-tweeter drivers on each side baffle (the dipole drivers). Separate amps deliver 150W to the woofer, 100W to the tweeter and 100W to the side-dipole drivers. A remote relay switch lets users compare the sound produced by the direct-radiating speakers, the dipole configuration or the Tripole configuration. Suggested retail price is $2,499 each.

November 2002—The M&K MPS-422 “wrap-around” multichannel monitor delivers close-field monitoring for seven channels in a single chassis, designed to fit around a standard 19-inch broadcast video monitor. Each channel has a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter with one or two 3.5-inch woofers. The left/center/right channels have two woofers; the four surround channels have a single woofer. All channels use M&K’s Phase-Focused crossover technology. The RK2 provides two channels of monitoring on a single chassis, and the RK3 provides three channels (for left, center and right) in the same unit. Based on M&K’s acclaimed MPS-2510 speaker, the new bi-amplified MPS-2510P is THX pm3-compliant and features dual 150W amps with user-adjustable gain control. User-selectable vertical directivity allows for optimization in various monitoring environments. The Narrow position has controlled directivity for focused sound. The Wide position covers a deeper seating area for listeners at a producer’s desk behind the mixer. The MPS-2510’s LF and HF transducers are each powered by 150W onboard amplification. Five of these monitors, along with an M&K Pro subwoofer, combine to create a 5.1 music monitoring system, providing the reference level playback required by Dolby and THX. MSRP: $1,699 each.

M&K PROFESSIONAL SURROUND SYSTEMS
March 1999—Miller & Kreisel offers a turnkey surround solution comprising the MPS-150 MAIN monitors, MPS-150 SUR surround monitors, MPS-350 SUB subwoofer and LFE-4 bass-management controller (system price: $6,950). The MPS-150 MAIN holds down the left-front, right-front and center duties. This compact full-range speaker is available in several physical configurations and offers switch-selectable directivity and stacking options. A proprietary phase-focused crossover ensures precise sound imaging. The MPS-150 SUR surround speaker offers direct, dipole and tripole output options, allowing it to achieve the diffused-yet-accurate sound required for realistic surround effects. These cabinets offer a front-radiating 5-inch woofer and 1-inch tweeter, complemented by full-range 3.25-inch cone mid/tweeters mounted in the left and right baffles. In combination with the LFE-4 bass-management controller, the MPS-350 SUB subwoofer delivers flat bass response to below 20 Hz, with an option for rising bass below 20 Hz. June 2005—Distributed by Synthax (www.synthax.com), the EMES Violett HR Active ($2,999/pair) is a two-way system with a 1.1-inch silk-dome tweeter and 8-inch carbon-paper woofer, each driven by 100W amps. Response is 48 to 20k Hz (±2 dB). The monitor employs dual 100W amplifiers. EMES’ $699/pair Kobalt is a two-way, bi-amplified near-field monitor using a 1-inch ferrofluid textile dome tweeter and a 5.5-inch polypropylene LF driver, driven by dual 70W amps for a rated response of 64 to 20k Hz (±3 dB).

EMES KOBALT MONITORS
February 2005—This blue, two-way bi-amped monitor boasts Emes’ ($649) new BI-Port and ISO-Rails technologies: The 25mm tweeter is integrated in the center of the BI-Port (bass-reflex system), allowing for efficient air cooling and enhanced high-frequency dispersion over long distances. In addition, the cabinet is isolated on silicon ISO-Rails, so there is no coupling to the surface underneath or slipping of the speaker during use. Both drivers are powered by matching 70W amplifiers. Input is via XLR or ¼-inch TRS connectors; a 16-position DIP switch adjusts the monitor listening level from -40 to +10 dB.

EMES SURROUND PACKAGES
July 2004—Largely known for its two-way/2-channel OWL Monitoring Series that uses patented “Embracing Sound Experience System” technology, EMES has also chosen to embrace multichannel customers by offering two surround packages. Its Pink tv 5.1 system ($4,999) includes five Pink near-fields and one Amber subwoofer, while the Violett HR 5.1 kit ($8,999) includes five Violett near-fields and one Amber HR subwoofer. The small, lightweight Pink tv active monitor features two identical 80W amplifiers, matched drivers and adjustable parameters such as DIP switches for sensitivity, bass and high-frequency control. The Pink tv has a 5.5-inch woofer, 1-inch neodymium tweeter and offers a frequency response of 58 to 19k Hz, ±2.5 dB. The Violett HR active monitor comprises a 7-inch carbon-composite woofer, a 1-inch Neodyme tweeter and dual 100W amplifiers. Completing the EMES multichannel packages, the Amber active subwoofer features a 10-inch, dual-coil, long-excursion driver, dual 140W amplifiers, a 80/150Hz highpass filter and DIP switches for level and phase control. The Amber sub offers 38 to 2k Hz frequency response. Similar to the Amber, the Amber HR subwoofer offers a slightly larger cabinet size; as a result, it has a 6Hz lower system frequency response.

EMES CYAN HR
December 2003—EMES Cyan HR. This three-way system has four 8-inch LF drivers, two 5-inch midrange drivers and a 1.25-inch HF driver. A multichannel connector enables tri-amplification, and the published response is 36 to 20k Hz. The passive subwoofer features two 15-inch LF drivers, each in their own isolated cavity, enabling true independent stereo operation. Power handling is rated at 200 watts continuously, 400 watts at peak and the published frequency response for the bass-reflex system is 38 to 1k Hz.

EMES NEAR FIELDS
December 2003—EMES offers several active near-fields, including the Black TV HR Active, a two-way coaxial system with a 7.5-inch LF driver and 1-inch HF driver. EMES’ Blue TV HR Active features two 8-inch LF drivers and a 1.25-inch HF driver. Its Violett HR Active sports a single 8-inch LF driver and 1.25-inch HF driver. All three of the EMES monitors use a 120W amp for lows and 100W amps for the highs.

EMES ORANGE HR
December 2003—EMES offers the Orange HR monitor, with two 8-inch LF drivers, two 4-inch mid drivers, a single 1.25-inch HF driver and a stated response of 38 to 20k Hz. Multiterminal connectors enable multiband amplification, and the power rating is 240 watts continuous, 400 watts at peak. EMES’ other offering is the Mini OWL. This unorthodox system enables reproduction of stereo audio from a single passive enclosure with two 5.25-inch LF drivers and two 25mm HF drivers.

EMES PINK TV ACTIVE
December 2003—EMES’ Pink TV Active features a 5-inch LF driver and a 1-inch HF driver. Each has its own 70W amplifier. It’s shielded for use near video monitors, and the manufacturer claims a healthy 58 to 20k Hz response.

EMES STUDIO MONITOR SYSTEMS MINI-OWL
October 2002—Based on the Swedish Embracing Sound Experience patent, EMES launches its second ESE-System monitor package. The Mini-OWL is a magnetically shielded, compact (13×11.5×8 inches) active monitor. All amp stages (2-channel/two-way) deliver 80W continuous power each—total 320W. A linear frequency response from 60 to 20,000 Hz (±1.5 dB) is guaranteed, due to EMES pre-selection of all driver components! Recommended listening distance: 3.5 to 10 feet. MSRP: $1,550.

Rokit G2 speakers are the second generation of the company’s Rokit speakers, and replace the current 5, 6 and 8-inch Rokit models. The Rokit G2 speaker incorporates several technologies from the company’s flagship VXT and E8B lines, including radically radiused edges along the front of the cabinet. The Rokit G2’s curved front baffle was engineered to minimize diffraction of high frequencies for a larger sweet spot. The baffle also houses a molded front-facing bass port that minimizes low-frequency phase distortion and the unwanted frequency emphasis that is common in rear-ported designs. Rokit G2 models have MAP prices of $149, $199 and $249 for the 5, 6 and 8-inch versions, respectively.

KRK VXT
June 2007—The new VXT Series monitors from KRK feature proprietary drivers; a curved faceplate; low-resonance, ABS structural foam cabinet designs; extended low end; and slotted ports to reduce port turbulence. All are two-way designs with a 1-inch silk-dome tweeter. The two-way active monitors resemble the cabinet geometry of the company’s other recent builds, using a die-cast, all-aluminum Minimum Diffraction Enclosure™ (MDE). The 10-inch cabinets include an Iso-Pod stand for aiming the speakers while decoupling them from the surface on which they sit. Each 1035B has two 15-inch woofers with a pair of 1,100W amps, two Genelec 5-inch mids, each with its own 250W amp, and a single 2-inch HF compression driver driven by its own 350W amp. June 2005—Distributed by TC Electronic, Dynaudio Acoustics’ BM 5A ($1,250/pair) active, compact studio monitor is powered by two 50W amps and offers a response of 50 to 21k Hz. This two-way design includes a 6.7-inch LF driver and 1-inch soft-dome tweeter. A $1,245 option, the BM 9S 200W subwoofer, has a 10-inch woofer, response down to 29 Hz and integrated bass management for stereo or surround. July 2004—Dynaudio Acoustics’ AIR Series is designed for those engineers who want integrated DSP and networking capabilities to be a part of their monitoring system. All components in an AIR system are connected through the TC Link network, which distributes control information and audio in between all system components. This allows control of a multichannel setup from the sweet spot using the AIR Remote controller or AIR SOFT software for Mac or PC platforms. The expansive AIR Series includes many models, along with a specially configured, 192kHz-supporting digital 5.1 system: the AIR 15-5.1 Pack 2D192. This package includes three “Digital 6” AIR 15 master monitors, two AIR 15 slave monitors, one AIR Base-2 dual 10-inch subwoofer, an AIR Remote and AIR SOFT. The AIR 15 is a two-way active monitor featuring a 10-inch woofer and 1.1 soft-dome tweeter. AIR master monitors have front panel LCD screens and data-entry buttons, and their rear panels handle one or two input signals. TC Link ports on the masters allow connection to AIR slave monitors that utilize link I/O ports. DYNAUDIO ACOUSTICS AIR 20
December 2003—Dynaudio’s AIR 20 is a three-way active near-field system with a 10-inch LF driver, 5.5-inch mid driver and 1.1-inch HF driver. All three drivers are powered by two 200W amplifiers. High-resolution (192kHz) digital input is enabled via Dual Wire. The DSP handles crossover with selectable crossover points. Presets allow the user to store favorite settings, and levels can be aligned within 0.1dB accuracy. Each monitor features parametric EQ and delay, which are accessed via computer. Each of the monitors communicates with the central control, but they are also interconnected for single-point control of playback volume levels.

DYNAUDIO ACOUSTICS BM 5.1A SURROUND BUNDLE
December 2001—Dynaudio Acoustics offers the BM 5.1A surround bundle for $11,198, a considerable savings over the unit prices. The system includes five BM15A speakers ($3,599 each) and a BX30 subwoofer ($2,200). The BM15A is a large two-way, active monitor with a 10-inch woofer, a special version of the Dynaudio ESOTEC soft-dome tweeter and an electronic phase-aligned crossover with built-in dual MOSFET amps. The front-ported BM15A’s cabinet has radiused edges on the front baffle to reduce boundary effects. Dynaudio’s ported BX30 subwoofer is designed to work with the company’s BM15A and BM6A monitors. Features include selectable internal filtering, continuously adjustable phase, a 130W amp and a 305mm woofer with a 102mm voice coil.

June 2000—BM15A is a two-way design featuring two discrete power amplifiers. The monitor has a 9.5-inch polypropylene bass driver with a 4-inch aluminum-alloy voice coil. The Esotech 28mm Ferrofluid-cooled dome tweeter features a neodymium magnet and aluminum-wire voice coil. March 1999—Dynaudio’s entry-level surround solution (the Artist’s System, priced at $8,999) offers five BM6A speakers for left-front, right-front, center, left-rear and right-rear. August 2005—The TB2S-A powered monitors from PMC (www.pmc-speakers.com) is the larger of two “digitally activated” speakers recently added to the line. The monitors, using a 6.5-inch woofer and 1-inch tweeter, use digital amplification from Flying Mole and PMC’s Advanced Transmission Line (ATL). The ATL technology boasts exceptional low-frequency extension, lower coloration, consistent balance at all levels and stable 3-D imaging. The black, unshielded monitors each weigh 20 pounds, are 15.7×7.8×13.7 inches (HxWxD) and are geared for near- or mid-field applications. XLR inputs are adjustable from 0 to -30 dB and reach SPLs of 111 dB at 3 feet. Options include mag shielding, a matching TLE1S sub and custom stands.

PMC DB1-A, TB2-A
June 2005—Unveiled a year ago at AES Berlin, PMC’s DB1-A and TB2-A monitors feature integral Flying Mole (www.flyingmole.co.jp/en) digital bi-phase fusion reference amp modules weighing only 1.1 pounds and supplying 160W. The units incorporate 5.5-inch and 6.7-inch LF drivers, respectively, with the same 1.1-inch soft-dome tweeter used in PMC’s larger mid-fields. PMC is also now offering a $7,995 Mix Pack, an active 5.1 kit with five DB-1A monitors and a powered 150W SubTLE1 subwoofer. The 100W DB-1A has a 5.5-inch woofer, a ferrofluid-cooled aluminum tweeter and a response of 5 to 25k Hz (+0/-3 dB).

The self-powered monitors house Flying Mole (www.flyingmole.co.jp/en) digital Bi-Phase Fusion reference amp modules, each weighing just 1.1 pounds and supplying 160 watts into 4 ohms. Proprietary LF drivers and cabinet design, along with hand-built crossover electronics, are said to ensure ultralow distortion and compression characteristics, enabling consistent performance at high SPLs. Both units incorporate PMC’s 5.5-inch and 6.7-inch LF drivers, respectively, with the same 1.1-inch soft-dome tweeter used in the company’s larger mid-fields. Flying Mole also showed its range of compact DAD-M100pro digital power amps.

PMC MIX PACK
July 2004—Known for its unique transmission line (TL) monitoring systems, British manufacturer PMC offers the PMC Mix Pack ($7,995), a fully matched, active 5.1 kit featuring five PMC DB-1A loudspeakers and a SubTLE1 subwoofer. TL technology effectively creates a long tunnel within a monitor by using internal partitioning. The tunnel folds throughout the length of a heavily dampened cabinet, and at the tunnel’s end, a hole vents into the room. As a result, the cabinet yields an extended LF range and dramatically reduces any extraneous coloration of the sound. According to PMC, the DB-1A loudspeaker is the world’s smallest TL monitor design with an effective line length of five feet within its very small cabinet. The 100W DB-1A features a 5.5-inch low-frequency driver, an aluminum, Ferrofluid-cooled HF driver, and a frequency response of 5 Hz to 25 kHz (+0/-3 dB). The SubTLE1 Subwoofer includes two 6.5-inch shielded custom drivers driven by a 150W low-distortion amplifier. The subwoofer incorporates an effective TL of 9.5 feet, allowing the TLE1 to produce a flat frequency response down to 22 Hz.

PMC DB1
November 2002-—Distributed by Bryston, PMC offers a wide range of studio and consumer loudspeakers. PMC’s latest is the DB1, the world’s smallest transmission-line design, with an effective line length of five feet in a compact two-way system, with LF output suggesting a much larger enclosure. Intended for stereo or surround applications (with the optional TLE subwoofer), the DB1 combines a 5-inch magnesium cast-frame woofer with a 1-inch aluminum-dome, Ferrofluid-cooled tweeter. Usable frequency response is 45 to 25k Hz. Dimensions are 11.4×6.1×9.2 inches (HxWxD); weight is 10 pounds. Retail is $795 each; options include a DB1-M horizontal center-channel speaker, a shielded version, four finishes, stands and wall brackets.

PMC MB2 MONITORS
September 2002—The new MB2 Series of three-way loudspeakers from the Professional Monitor Company includes single- and twin-cabinet systems, in passive and active forms; matching horizontal center-channel versions are also available. The MB2 Series offers a 20-25k Hz (±3dB) frequency range. The MB2-A (active single-cabinet system) and MB2XBD-A (active twin-cabinet) PMC systems are driven by ultra-low distortion electronics co-developed with Bryston. An XB2 subwoofer provides an LFE channel for surround installs or when more bass headroom is required. The variants of the MB2 Series are based on a driver complement including a 12-inch woofer, 3-inch soft-dome mid and silk-dome HF tweeters. Prices start at $12,100/pair.

PMC SUB BASS UNIT
March 2002—The new TLE1 active subwoofer system from PMC features an unusually tall and slender profile — the unit measures 21.5×7.75×19.75 inches (HxWxD) and weighs 42 pounds. Two 6.5-inch, shielded custom woofers are driven by a 150W, ultra-low-distortion amp based on a Bryston design. Featuring a true transmission line design with an effective length of 9.5 feet, the TLE1 offers a flat frequency response down to 22 Hz. The unit has stereo balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs, level control with calibrated settings for THX™ specifications, variable phase control (0°-360°) and a variable roll-off (12 dB/octave) from 38 to 155 Hz.

PMC BB-5
December 2001—The PMC BB-5 Active System ($138,000) is a top-of-the-line powered surround system from the Professional Monitor Company. The BB-5 monitor is available in active stereo pair configurations and comes in black ash, walnut, oak, cherry and rosewood finishes. Its transmission-line design features a 15-inch radial woofer, 3-inch fabric-dome midrange and 1-inch silk soft-dome tweeter with double chamber. Available in passive and active versions, the latter includes an external amp and electronic crossover, and sports a frequency response of 17 to 25k Hz. The company’s XB3-A sub ($7,000 each) rounds out this massive system with its own 15-inch radial woofer, double-veneered MDF cabinet and 800W power-handling rating.

PMC AML-1
June 2000—The AML-1 features a 6.5-inch carbon-fiber and Nomex honeycomb flat-piston bass driver, which allows large controlled linear excursions. A 1.25-inch high power-handling soft-dome unit is used for the monitor’s high frequencies. The two drivers are integrated by discrete, low-noise active crossovers. The AML-1’s amplifier and crossover designs are licensed from the high-end manufacturer Bryston. The speaker’s bypass controls provide for input level adjustment, LF roll-off, LF tilt and HF tilt. This bi-amplified monitor uses a 100W RMS LF amplifier and an 80W RMS HF amplifier. MSRP: $4,995 per pair.

PMC IB1S
March 1999—PMC offers a variety of systems designed for surround application in both nonpowered and powered versions (with Bryston amplification, of course). The IB1S ($4,500/pair, nonpowered) mid-field monitor is a three-way design using transmission-line technology for extended bass reproduction, lower distortion and higher output. The IB1S combines a stiff carbon-fiber/Nomex woofer with soft fabric mid- and high-frequency dome drivers. Recently, PMC has introduced “low-profile” versions of its IB1S, TB1S (two-way/7-inch) and LB1 (two-way/4.5-inch) speakers, further expanding the suitability of PMC systems in post applications.
